Thumbnails not showing

Postby Echelon » Wed Jan 24, 2007 9:52 pm

Hi!
First, let me thank you for a fine app, which leaves a lot of promise for the future! :)

Being quite new to linux, everything is very still very confusing, though I'm learning slowly, and i hope my questions will not be to noobish for you. ;-)
Yesterday i managed to install MMS from a .deb-package found here(got the patch 60-one). And today I set samba up and moved my music library to this machine.
Playback and everything works smooth, but instead of album covers i get these small black boxes:

Why is this?

Also, the IMDb-search is not working, it claims there are no movies with the title 12 Angry Men or Madagascar (which are the only movies I have on this machine) even though there is!?

I'm running an AMD Athlon@1266MHz with 768MB RAM, Radeon 9200 256MB and Ubuntu Edgy Eft.

Thanks in advance!
Anders

Hi and welcome,
I had this problem quite a few times, and as far as I remember it was always a permission mismatch. Do ensure your user does posses the right to write into all folders like:
  • /usr/share/mms
  • /etc/mms/
  • /var/lib/mms/
  • /var/cache/mms

Check the permissions of these directories and apply chmod ... and/or chown. This should solve your problem.
Usualy this problem results from being started as a common ubuntu-user, but occasionally started as root. All files are created by root, e.g. previews, can't be accessed by the normal users anymore.

Regards,

Andreas

Hi,

I can confirm a non-working thumbnail preview generation, if MMS is installed via the debian package.
I had to perform first:

Code: Select all

chown -R acme:acme /var/cache/mms /var/lib/mms /etc/mms /usr/share/mms

I guess not all directory ownerships are necessary, but it's working. Until Roman fixes this bug, it's a valid workaround.

Regards,

Andreas

Problem here is that /usr/share never is writeable for everyone ... and will never be ...

Here's what debian-developers say:
I find it deeply wrong that you attempt to set a+rw in
/usr/share/mms
why would you want *anyone* to write there? If the software requires such
permissions, the software is *buggy*, please fix it or bother upstream until
they do.

and

> should be fine running without creating a user ... !?

The install target creates directories in /var/lib and /var/cache and I
don't see it as an option to allow all users full access to those
directories, so the obvious choice to me seemed to be to run it as a
new, separate user.

Will see what we can do ...

I think we have to reorganize the structure a little more. But this will have to be discussed in another thread

The thumbnail-problem should be solved by just changing the ownership of /var/cache/mms

Bah, Hell. Your solution fixed my problem, tbh i really don't care if this solution is "buggy" as they call it ;P Thanks a lot!

Yes. MMS only needs /var/lib/mms and /var/cache/mms to be writeable. I hope that is with the devs. The other things should not be needed with the new layout.
