After MMS Life!?

Postby Uatschitchun » Thu Jan 16, 2014 5:41 pm

Hi there empty halls ;)

In a not so far future, I need to switch my good old living-room system ;(

I wouldn't be sad if I could use MMS further on as I am no friend of XBMC and I still do love MMS ;)

What to do?

What did you?

I bought a RaspberryPi and have XBMC (OpenElec) running on it. It's quite nice. You can even use "AirPlay" to stream videos from your smart phone (mine has Android 4.1 on it).
EDIT: but I use it mostly for streaming pictures from the smart phone to the TV.

MMS did compile on the RPi, but I had no text in the menu. Forum is dead and I did not figure out why I can't run on Raspbian. Since then I didn't try it anymore.
Anyone else interested in building MMS for Raspbian? We would have to use omxplayer for hardware acceleration mpeg2.

Yes, thought of something like that, too ...

I fear that I'll miss MMS' simplicity ;)

I've ended up building my own media center calling it UMS i. e. Uli's Media System.

The name, not the project. :D

Been a while where I found this: http://sourceforge.net/projects/pyhtpc/.

Very interesting approach but unfortunately not satisfyingly working and - as you see - not further updated.

So I took this stuff (never having written one single python line before) and adapted it to my wishes.

Some selected features:
- highly configurable surface (fonts, font size, font color, list size, item properties, list sort properties and much more)
- Mein Steckenpferd: video bookmarking :D
- lirc support
- ability to set shortcuts to often used subdirectories in the - if you'd like to call it this way - main view (my idea of a media center is throwing this strict separation of video-audio-image handling completely overboard)
- deleting files from disk space (e. g. already seen video recordings, one-way or boaring movies :D)
- modular design
- adapts the X screen resolution
- watching stereoscopic movies at a non 3D capable TV
and and and...

By now only the videoplayer module based on mplayer2 is working but integrating geeqie as an image viewer should be a matter of two minutes work. Volunteers welcome :D)

Fine, let's summarize:

Advantages:
- easy configurable design with many options
- working on all linux distributions (easy portable to other platforms with python support) without installing libmmx, libmmx2, commonppc12, nextlib, andonemorelibcc, gcc+, gccdouble+ a. s. o. :D. Just less python modules are needed.
- great, friendly and competent developer team :D :D :D
- no useless stuff you can't discard
- free accessible source code based on python script
and much more.

Disadvantages:
- there are NO disadvantages. :D :D :D

I know what you want. You'd like to see pictures, do you?
btw.: sry for those movie titles... :D

From what I read here, it should be possible to build MMS on RaspberryPi:

viewtopic.php?f=28&t=2901#p19887

So this might still be a good option.

I also wonder about the future development of the project. Are the original devs still around? What about funding to boost MMS again?

I tried MMS on RaspberryPi with 256MBRAM. I think there is all too much work to be done to get MMS as smooth as XBMC runs on the RPi.
I don't want to stop anybody who wants to make MMS run on the RPi, but it needs to be programmed to use OpenGL-ES to "boost" and also the SD-Card is a real pain in the ass if you ask me. It slows down the mashine if MMS runs in grafical modes (what XBMC does, but faster ).
Another point is the missing support for no more running "plugins/scripts" and the allways changeing api for weather plugin. The much bigger dev-community around XBMC makes it hard for MMS to keep up.

I would have nothing against reanimating MMS ;)

Still love it!!!
