My MMS project - suggestions welcome :)

Postby MartinZ » Thu Nov 20, 2008 11:31 am

Hi All, At first thanks for nice project. At first little bit about me. I know Linux in user level, but I wish to make media PC with MMS frontend. So, some things I can do quite OK, but for some problems I did not find solutions. In this topic I want to make some small HowTo.
1. My hardware is Via Epia M1000 mainboard, SPDIF sound output to home cinema, SVIDEO output to projector and VGA for monitor, to control media center when projector is off (when listening music etc.) Now controlling with keyboard, later planned to add remote control.

2. Now about software. I wish to install system as small as possible to play audio, video, DVD and see picture slideshow.

3. What I have done untill now.
a). Install Debian stable (Etch) base system from netinstall CD
b). Install X Window system without any Desktop enviroment (Is it a good idea?) (HOWTO: http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?t=12256)
c). Added debian-multimedia sources (HOWTO: http://www.debian-multimedia.org/)
d). Added MMS sources and install MMS + mplayer + w32codecs as described here (HOWTO: http://forum.mymediasystem.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=596) with

Code: Select all

apt-get install mms-standard mplayer-nogui w32codecs

e). Install and configure Alsa (HOWTO: http://linuxhelp.blogspot.com/2006/10/steps-to-get-audio-to-work-in-debian.html) I need to run

Code: Select all

alsamixer
to unmute digital output and put volume of it to zero - then I get sound out from SPDIF.
f). As I want just one resolution 800X600 - I remove higher resolutions from xorg.conf
g). I check fstab to see the actual CD/DVD settings and edit MMS config file.

So now my computer boot till console login screen, when I login I can run

Code: Select all

startx
and in Xserv console run

Code: Select all

mms
. So my MMS show up and looks nice. Audio is working nice. Also internet radio is OK.

PROBLEMS
[SOLVED] 1. When I try to watch DVD, there is just starting sounds from it and then nothing. When I close MMS in console there is error, that my video did not support vn. Any suggestions
[SOLVED] 2. Is there some info how I can do, that my PC autologin, run startx and MMS? I try this from Wiki, but it did not work out for me: http://wiki.mymediasystem.org/wiki/index.php/Examples#Starting_MMS_from_.2Fetc.2Finittab
[SOLVED]3. Is it possible to remove TV section from MMS? I do not have TV card and not planned to get one :)

Thanks for Your help. Probably some more questions will follow.

Welcome !

First tip:
Don't use 1.0.8.5! It isn't supported anymore ;)

We'll have 1.1.0 called "stable" very soon, so switching over would be best ... see:
http://forum.mymediasystem.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=1163

With using 1.1.0, you'll even have the advantage to make use of plugins, so you can just install the plugins you need ..

Btw:
Nice collection :P

Thanks for answer. Find out about 1.1.0 and allready installed it. Really nice. It solve also my problem 3 :)

But now I have problem with DVD playback. All the time there is :
"The disc does not contain any recognizable files"

Audio CD playback works perfect!

Any tips on it?

One more thing. I put in drive DVD disc with .avi on it. Try to play video from hdd, go to cdrom - message was "folder is empty" when I mount it in console - the disk become awailable. I start playing file (usinf mplayer) screen even did not flicker - I can hear audio, but no video at all. I have the same mms screen.

I am definetely missing something, but what????

Soooo! With my experiments I screwd up my first installation, but get a lot of knowledge. :)

Did again clear Debian install just with Xorg, then install mplayer and xine - make testing without MMS. Now I get a lot better resaults. I use Xine for DVD because mplayer for me did not show DVD menus. I did more or less ewerything as in my first post.

Now audio plugin works fine - internet radio, mp3 and audioCD

[SOLVED]
Video plugin is ok when playing with mplayer (avi from HDD and CD/DVD) Xine is not starting in fullscreen (with F key I can get it fullscreen, but I want it start fullscreen) I think I am missing option -f in xine config, can someone can post Xine config options? - Yes it is -fs option :)

Weather plugin - I have problems with Latvian language in it. I define LV as language and it show info in local language, but with incorrect special characters (ā ē ī š č)

Piglets I did not test all of them (did not play with config) but looks more or less clear :)

May be someone can post here command to suspend to disk? I want to put it instead of shutdown command.

I will be interested to translate MMS to my local language - can You please point me to where I can find language files?

translation to lv?

hmm - possible - but you need to manipulate all the Makefiles in all po-Directories (add lv as a language) - do a make update-po in the po-dir's and edit the lv.po - files resulting from that i suppose.

That leads to an improvement regarding this - "LANGUAGES" should be set globally and referenced by all the Makefiles - @arj - can/will you do so?

Nice, Nice ;)

So we get latvian translations?!
Martin, if you need help on that, just ask!

Are you able to do a bzr checkout, update the translations to create lv.po files, etc. ? If not, I can even help on that!

/Edit
Attached is a bundle against latest revno, that adds lv.po files !
If Anders takes a look into it, translation can start ;)

Bundle looks good.

http://wiki.mymediasystem.org/wiki/inde ... load_Devel <- download instructions for latest bzr. After that download Romans file, renamed it to lv.bzr.gz. Run gunzip lv.bzr.gz, then bzr merge lv.bzr. Now you got the following files:

plugins/feature/audio/players/xine/po/lv.po
plugins/feature/audio/po/lv.po
plugins/feature/clock/po/lv.po
plugins/feature/epg/po/lv.po
plugins/feature/game/po/lv.po
plugins/feature/movie/players/genericplayer/po/lv.po
plugins/feature/movie/players/mplayer/po/lv.po
plugins/feature/movie/po/lv.po
plugins/feature/picture/po/lv.po
plugins/feature/python/po/lv.po
plugins/feature/tv/po/lv.po
plugins/feature/vbox/po/lv.po
plugins/feature/weather/po/lv.po
plugins/input/evdev/po/lv.po
plugins/input/lirc/po/lv.po
plugins/output/lcd/po/lv.po
plugins/output/mpeg/dvb/po/lv.po
plugins/output/mpeg/dxr3/po/lv.po
plugins/output/mpeg/mpeg/po/lv.po
plugins/output/sdl/po/lv.po
po/lv.po

Open them with your favorite editor and start translating :)

suppose that you have your lv.bzr in /tmp:

Code: Select all

cd /somewhere
bzr get http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~team-mms/mms/1.1.0
cd mms-1.1.0
bzr merge /tmp/lv.bzr

MartinZ wrote:How can I check the translation? I want to add it in my system.

as you are using my debs you need to overwrite the translations:

Code: Select all

./configure --prefix=/usr
for i in `find ./ -name po`; do make -C $i; done
for i in `find ./ -name po`; do make install -C $i; done

this should re-build all translations and install them into the correct dirs.

During "make", the output looks like this:
make: Entering directory `/usr/local/src/mms/mms-1.1.0.work/po'
da:
146 translated messages, 1 untranslated message.
de:
147 translated messages.
cs:
62 translated messages, 25 fuzzy translations, 60 untranslated messages.
pt:
67 translated messages, 25 fuzzy translations, 55 untranslated messages.
sv:
69 translated messages, 24 fuzzy translations, 54 untranslated messages.
fr:
147 translated messages.
ru:
97 translated messages, 15 fuzzy translations, 35 untranslated messages.
es:
112 translated messages, 3 fuzzy translations, 32 untranslated messages.
fi:
147 translated messages.
pl:
146 translated messages, 1 untranslated message.
it:
125 translated messages, 8 fuzzy translations, 14 untranslated messages.

So you'll get a status of how many items are "fuzzy" (not correct anymore) and how many are untranslated.
