Some alternatives I know about :
- Linutop : http://www.linutop.com/ (only VGA output :( quite the same thing as koolu)
- or a home made mini-itx based system : http://www.mini-itx.com/
more powerful, TV out, audio 5.1 to 7.1 depending on models, etc. but more expensive :?

I would be really interested in such a system :
- low power consumption
- no noise
- small and well intagrated next to TV set

Yeah ... only VGA and as I read on linutop, they even haven't tested fullscreen video ;)

koolu has running mythtv in the vid on their page.

It seems they are interested in mediacenters cause I was asked if I'm involved with http://www.linuxmce.com (a branch of http://www.plutohome.com)

I just asked for shipping costs ... maybe we get one for testing puposes :P

I'll be pleased to know how that hardware works with all kind of videos.
It should be really intersting to configure and optimize.

But the lack of TV-out is clearly a no-go point to me :?

Yes, but all ressources I will find about it are in german...
Big problem for me

What's its power consumption ?
Did you get Linux (and MMS) running on this ?
Is it possible to install hard drive in it or only attach it via USB ?
what tv output quality ?
Is it playing smoothly all kind of videos format ?
Can I use it for making coffee ? :p

All that kind of questions, and only german answers I can't understand :(

And the most important, why are they as cheap ?

Not sure about it but I can get some information...

esprit wrote:Did you get Linux (and MMS) running on this ?

I'm running an altered Slackware called "zenslack" on it wich starts MMS immediately after booting. Takes app. 1 minute to get into MMS.
But I never turn it off so it is always "on"
Next weeks I'm going to install Xubuntu on the flash dom I've installed.

esprit wrote:Is it possible to install hard drive in it or only attach it via USB ?

You have 1 ide port so it is possible to builtin a 3.5" or 2.5" hdd and/or a dvd drive. You can attach this drives in external versions via USB too.

esprit wrote:what tv output quality ?

The standard output is via SCART. I soldered a VGA output with few cables and the right port. No problem. The quality is as on my pc and I can run MMS in high resolution :)

esprit wrote:Is it playing smoothly all kind of videos format ?

Video playback is smooth. But be aware of playing videos in high definition. The cpu is too slow to make that.

esprit wrote:Can I use it for making coffee ? :p

Sure, plug your coffee machine into one of the usb ports :)

esprit wrote:And the most important, why are they as cheap ?

It is sold with video on demand services by german t-online provider. So most customers sell it by ebay cause this vod service sucks

Hope you know now what to do 8)

So, I asked our sys admin :)

The box consumes 20w with a 2.5" hdd
and
30w with a larger 3.5" hdd.

Hope this helps you
