[Call] Everyone's needed!

Postby Uatschitchun » Tue Dec 12, 2006 9:55 am

*** IMPORTANT ***

Hi there!

As you may have noticed, we have the chance to get an article introducing MMS in german C't ...

So I would like to invite _all_ of you to participate getting the wiki uptodate!

What are "stumble-stones" you met installing and configuring MMS which are not described in the wiki or could be done in a better or easier to understand way?

What is missing?

Would be nice, if everyone can search his/her mind and see if he/she is able to put worthy hints into the wiki or post them here so we can collect!

Interesting things could also be the Game- and TV-Modul ... what are your setups, what are usable combinations?

Concerning MMS and VDR ... what are your experiences? In what ways are you using these two killer-apps ;) and what plugins do you use (xine, xinelibout, streamdev)?

Who is using MMS on Edgy? Is the *buntu-part in the wiki uptodate?

What are your start-methods for bringing up MMS? Do you start it per command-line? Do you start up a separate X-Session for MMS? What scripts are you using and are you willing to share these?

etc. etc. etc. ...

It would be nice, if the posts here form more a collection than a discussion ... thus helping to port your posts to the wiki ... or just post a little message if you've done an update!

Thx
Roman

P.S. Me would like to see the mentioned article as a present to Anders and to all who have participated!
Not everyone is able to code ... but everyone is able to write
Let your fingers fly ...

Keyboard configuration, I have a ruwido keyboard:
Image

This one does not have keys like Home, End, etc. which are default in MMS. It's also not enough to configure MMS but you also have to configure Xine and VDR.

It would be nice to have this configurable in MMS, something like a wizard which starts automaticly at first startup and is available later under the Settings menu.

What is missing?

see above, plus even better VDR integration

Interesting things could also be the Game- and TV-Modul ... what are your setups, what are usable combinations?

I use the TV module together with xineliboutput, that means:

-VDR runs as daemon all the time in background
-MMS runs as frontend (X-Server)
-the TV module starts vdr-sxfe (from xineliboutput package) which connects to VDR

Who is using MMS on Edgy? Is the *buntu-part in the wiki uptodate?

I use Edgy.

What are your start-methods for bringing up MMS? Do you start it per command-line? Do you start up a separate X-Session for MMS? What scripts are you using and are you willing to share these?

I use a small autologin program which is started by the init process (previously inittab, in edgy which is using upstart it's defined in /etc/event.d/). This one starts X, MMS is started via .xinitrc

I volunteer to post the whole procedure in the wiki.

I hope that helps a bit.

Wow - the keyboard is way cool, and so small!
Well, the disadvantage are of course the missing navigation keys.

Here are the two keyboards, I'm using:

These are "full-featured" keyboards with an integrated mouse. Well - the Num-Pad is missing of course.

And a really big THANKS for the contribution in the Wiki in advance!

Regards,

Andreas

ps.: What do you all think about a hardware-section in the wiki and/or here?

Would you provide this personal script?
Are You using lirc? And if yes, would you also provide your input-lirc?
We could set up a collection for input-lirc. I've struggled at the beginning with this configuration very much.
What Linux-Distro are you using?

Andreas

Yes, of course I can provide it.
It does nothing really wonderful, just launching mms as a non-root user

I'll post it on Monday, with my inittab, my shutdown script and my input-lirc (yes i am using lirc)

I'm using Debian Testing (one year old testing, not the actual one).

Isn't this keyboard able to use evdev as input?

Is anyone using evdev?

It would be nice to have this configurable in MMS, something like a wizard which starts automaticly at first startup and is available later under the Settings menu.

Like VDR does on first startup?

So where did you get these packages? Afaik (and as far as I use it), xineliboutput is not available from buntu-sources and Tobi's packages have wrong dependencies ... so you had to compile them manualy, right?

I hope that helps a bit.

A lot!

Il n'y a pas de quoi ! :D

So here are they :
My inittab (the interessant party only) :
# Note that on most Debian systems tty7 is used by the X Window System,
# so if you want to add more getty's go ahead but skip tty7 if you run X.
#
1:2345:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty1
2:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty2
x:2:respawn:/usr/local/bin/mms-init.sh
#3:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty3
#4:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty4

/usr/local/bin/mms-init.sh :
#! /bin/sh
DATE=`date +%Y-%m-%d_%Hh%Mm%S`
exec /bin/su - -c "mms > /tmp/mms-log_$DATE 2>&1" esprit

This launch mms with 'esprit' as user.
The log is redirected in /tmp/mms-log_date_and_time so i f I got problem I can see what mms had say (if it said something)

The last script I got is /usr/local/bin/mms-halt.sh :
#!/bin/sh
/usr/bin/sudo -u root /sbin/halt -p

Then in /etc/mms/config it is defined as the shutdown_script

do you see a chance to put this into wiki, or should I do it?

Hi,
last few weeks I've done some updates and new entries in the wiki. but this doesn't mean it's completely up-to-date now. So I invite everybody to have a look and update if necessary.

Thanks in advance,

Andreas

You can do it if you want, I don't want to put it in an inapropriate section :)

OK!
Could you check it? It's in the Examples Section.

@Anders:
Could you tell, where themes can be downloaded? Since you've changed the layout of your website (mms.sunsite.dk), the link in the wiki for downloading themes doesn't work anymore.

Regards,

Andreas
